How To: Authorize Your Tax Preparer as a Representative with CRA

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has changed how representatives like us can get authorization to access your account. This change is specific to all our brand-new clients. Previously, we could utilize our tax software to gain access to your information on file with the CRA.  As part of their efforts to improve security and protect your information, CRA has added some extra steps to this process.

To allow us to gain Authorization for our NEW clients, there are two options. If you have access to your CRA MyAccount, you can choose either option. If you do not have access to your CRA MyAccount, you must use Option #2 or register for a CRA MyAccount.

Option #1 – if you have online access to your CRA My Account

  1. Log in to your CRA online account.
  2. Select “Profile” at the top left menu.
  3. Scroll down to “Authorized Representatives” on the lower right and select “+ ADD”.
  4. Enter the information for SheDo Tax provided by your tax preparer.
  5. Confirm and Submit. Let your tax preparer know when authorization has been completed!

Option #2 – if you do NOT have online access to your CRA My Account.

  • Provide us with your most recent Notice of Assessment that was received at least 6 months ago. In some cases, CRA will ask for information from a specific year. If so, we will let you know the exact NOA needed.
  • We will submit an authorization request and send you a signature page from CRA to sign and return. Once we receive this page back and upload it, we should have access immediately.

If you are a first-time filer, (have never filed taxes with the CRA before) we will not be able to gain access with Option #2 until you receive your first Notice of Assessment.

Note that if you do not have access to your CRA account and do not have a copy of your most recent NOA, we will not be able to gain online access to your CRA account. In this case, we will need you to sign up for a CRA MyAccount and grant us access according to the steps in Option #1.

To proceed with filing your taxes WITHOUT access to your CRA account, we will need you to provide all tax slips and other information, and we cannot verify the accuracy of the information. In these cases, CRA may reassess your return after filing to include any tax slips that were missed.

We thank all of our new clients in advance for your patience as we comply with the new CRA regulations together!
