Getting Ready to Sign up for a CRA MyAccount

Signing up for a CRA MyAccount is an important part of keeping on top of your obligations as a taxpayer in Canada. Here are some steps to take to make the registration process as easy as possible!

Before you start, make sure that you have the following information:

  • Your date of birth, Social Insurance Number (SIN) and name as it appears on your SIN card
  • Your most recently assessed tax return from within the last 2 years. You’ll be asked for certain numbers as they were originally reported on this return.
  • A cell phone to receive texts, personal computer where you can save a passcode grid, or a third-party authenticator app to enroll for Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA).

When you register for a CRA MyAccount, you will either create a CRA user ID and password or use a Sign-in Partner (certain banks with whom you are registered for online banking). You can only have one sign-in option activated at a time.

You will need to verify your identity EITHER:

  • with a current Canadian Passport, Driver’s License or Provincial/Territorial ID card (Provincial/Territorial Health Cards are NOT accepted) AND phone/computer camera
  • OR by entering a CRA security code sent to you in the mail (will take approximately 10 business days).

If you need your security code mailed to you and your address on file with CRA is not up to date, you will need to call to update your address.

Once you are ready to register, go to the CRA website and follow the steps to create your account. You can view the list of sign-in partners on the website – this list includes most major Canadian banks and credit unions.

Once you have registered, even if you are still waiting for a CRA security code in the mail, you should be able to get limited access to your tax information in the meantime, including viewing your Notice of Assessment.
